Over all Review of Bajaj Avenger 220
Bajaj Avenger 220 undoubtedly stands out a the best cruiser bike among other Indian bikes of the same segment. This terrain bike was launched as the new entrant in the Bajaj’s Avenger series being the successor of highly acclaimed Bajaj Avenger 200. The long handle and big fuel tank coupled with a wind shield gives the bike an elegant look making heads turn round with it. It comes with the same DTS-i engine that was also seen in Bajaj Pulsar 220. With a big fuel tank of 14 litres and a mileage of 32-35kmpl on city roads and even higher on highways, the bike is sure to run for a minimum of 200km without a halt for fuel. With low seating, this cruiser is sure to give you a comfortable and steady ride.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
Mileage and fuel economy can be counted on as the USP of any automobile in the Indian market. The company has equipped this stylish cruiser with their patented DTS-i technology but the enormous weight and bulk in the bike goes against the fuel efficiency, which this technology is known to provide. It offers a very average fuel economy of 32-35kmpl when riding it on the city roads and stretches to 43kmpl on open highways. With a big fuel tank of 14 litres capacity it can cover a decent 200 kms without refuelling.
It is so beautifully designed that what color it is, is least important. Though the Plasma Blue color of Bajaj Avenger has seen the highest sale, but all the available colors of the bike just adds on to its elegance. Just like its predecessor,Bajaj Avenger 220 is available in color combinations of of Plasma Blue, Cocktail Wine Red, Mist Grey Silver and Midnight Black.
Acceleration and Pick up
All it takes is mere 15.8 seconds, for the Bajaj Avenger 220 to cross the mark of 100 km and is capable of reaching to a top speed of 125kmph which though is decent for a 220cc cruiser but is not impressive enough, given its capability. The 4-stroke DTS-i engine of this bike is capable enough of achieving a maximum torque of 17.5Nm at 7000RPM which in-turn helps in better acceleration and pick-up. The heavy built of the bike certainly affects its acceleration as Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-i with same engine can cross the 60kmph mark in just 3.7 seconds and with a smooth pick up can reach the top speed of 144kmph.
Looks is the element which defines this Indian cruiser. Many people might find the design of the bike to be very old fashioned but the elegant and neatly carved body and its front-positioned dual down-tube frame with rear-wheel swing arm, gives a true retro feel. Though the company has not actually worked upon the exteriors and are highly reminiscent of the Bajaj Avenger 200. The company has gone for a bigger and more classic aesthetic for this bike with large round headlamp coupled with matching round shaped indicators and rectangular rear-view mirrors. Superb material quality is another advantage of the bike, its aluminium levers and metal handlebar weights look solid, durable and classy. The optional windshield though seems to be flimsy but adds on to the vintage look.
Something in which the Bajaj Avenger 220 is way ahead of its predecessor is COMFORT. With rider seat broader than that of 200, the riding position with this is more ergonomic, giving higher level of comfort. The dual density foam seats not only ensure ache free drives for the rider but coupled with a back rest, it also full comfort for the pillion rider also. The typical low-slung seating makes it easy to handle. While the wide tyres at front and rear provides for better road grip and stability, the improved aerodynamics helps the driver feel considerably less air resistance while driving at high speeds.
Following the normal cruiser trend of being big along the length and small when it comes to width, Bajaj Avenger 220 runs along a length of 2195mm, width of 750mm and a height of 1070mm. The bike has a wheelbase of 1475mm and comes with a low ground clearance of 162mm keeping the center of gravity low. The enormous kerb weight of 154.5kg makes it tougher in handling but once used to it, the weight is no more an issue.
The Indian market offers very less competition, when it comes to 220cc segment bikes with not many manufacturers fighting in this segment. As earlier mentioned, Bajaj Avenger 220 sports the same DTS-i engine which we earlier saw in Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-i. With a displacement of 219.89cc, it has a 4-stroke, single cylinder, air cooled, Bajaj’s patented DTS-i engine. Power output is up by 1.5 PS and the engine generates a peak power of 19.03PS at 8400RPM. And the Bajaj Avenger 220 produces a torque of 17.5Nm at 7000RPM. The oil cooler’s size has been increased by 33%, compared to its predecessor. The bike now has four chambers which helps in cooling of the bike with minimum power drop in extreme conditions along with a 5-speed gearbox adding on to the smoothness of the bike and crisp feel with powerful throttling.
When it comes to any bike, wheel size and type have great emphasis on the viewer and to its advantage, Bajaj Avenger 220 comes with 6 Spoke black mag alloy wheels, plated with chrome, the wheels look chunky yet classic. With huge tyres, the company wants to provide the riders with proper comfort and makes the bike more efficient and attractive. The wheels are unidirectional tube type for both front and rear end with dimensions of 90/90 x 17” and 130/90 x 15” for the front and rear wheel respectively and the wheelbase of 1475mm.
Being a cruiser and made for long ways, we cannot accept anything less, than it being stable. Bajaj Avenger 220 is equipped with telescopic suspension at the front and hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear, giving a smooth ride with high comfort levels. With 260mm disc brakes at the front and 130mm drum brakes at the rear, the bike has a quick time response.
Handling and Control
With a large wheelbase, the Bajaj Avenger 220 provides a comfortable and safe ride. With the added bulk on the bike, it feels slow, sluggish and difficult to manage, adding on to the difficulties when in dense traffic. The handle is placed significantly higher and the first time users will surely face troubles with the weight and handle of the bike. But, while turning through corners and cutting bends, it is surely much more capable than its predecessor, Bajaj Avenger 200. One can surely rely on the safety issues with this bike because of its highly responsive brakes and advanced suspension system.
Bajaj Avenger 220 comes with a highly powered engine with superb performance and decent mileage, strong pick-up and top speeds. The bike is ideal for highway rides with impressive and classy built. Excellent looks combined with good suspension and capable braking ensuring full safety of riders.
Seeing the capability of engine, the mileage is not up to the mark. Not so comfortable journey for the pillion rider. Weighs on the bulkier side making it difficult to manage quite a few times.
