Bajaj Platina Review
Bajaj Platina, the most fuel efficient bike of India is sold more than 7 lakhs units, since its inception. The reason behind is its mileage with the cheapest price tag. The bike is a package of looks and mileage with the most reasonable price. Platina with Bajaj’s other series like Pulsar and Discover has also made its lovers. Targeting at the commuter segment the bike has made a significant impact. The bike won the Bike of the Year award in 2007 by NDTV.
Mileage given by the Platina is complimentary in the commuter segment. For improving the mileage, Bajaj has provided the ExhausTec Technology to the bike. Bajaj is claiming that the bike will surely give a mileage of 65 Kilometers per litres but the actual mileage will fall around to 55-57 Kmpl, which is difficult to get. There is a fuel tank of 13 litres. Dominating the market in the mileage section, Platina is climbing at a good rate.
The Bajaj Platina comes with 99.27 cc air-cooled engine and the 4-stroke single cylinder engine which helps to maintain the healthy ride and an good mileage. The motorcycle has the maximum net power of 8.2 Bhp at 7500 rpm and a maximum net torque of 8.05 Nm at 4500 rpm. There is a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox which helps keeping the mileage up and provide a smoother ride. The front tire is about 2.75 X 17 mm and the rear tyre is of 3 X 17 mm. The bike is equipped with 125 mm travel hydraulic telescopic type front suspension and 100mm travel hydraulic SNS type rear suspension.
Platina is available in three combination of colors and that are Black with Blue decal, black with red decal, and red with red decal. Talking about the engine, the 100cc engine is quite slow but better than other bikes falling in this segment. The bike speeds from 0-60 Kmph in 9.68 seconds which is pretty good for a 100cc bike. The top speed of the Platina is of 90 Kilometres per hour. The motorcycle has a great figure with slim, low and slightly extended body where the measures are 1990mm long, 770 mm wide and 1090 mm tall. The weight of the bike is just 113 Kgs where the ground clearance is of 162 mm. While concerning about the cornering, the ride with the bike is quite comfortable and smooth.
Overall Review
Continuing the successful reign in the two-wheeler market, Bajaj pulls out another gun from its arsenal. Bajaj Platina, the 100cc ride is a volume bike. With the great mass appeal that it carries with itself, Bajaj has sold more than 700000 units since its launch in 2006. The main USP of this bike is its top-notch mileage and such a low price tag. With the tag of cheapest bike in the market, Bajaj has surely not compromised in the looks department. With its in-demand brothers, Pulsar and Discover, Platina has become people’s choice in a short period of time. Aiming at the ‘commuter’ segment of the market, Platina has made a significant impact. Platina has filled the few blank spaces left by Bajaj in the two-wheeler segment. Platina has even won Bike Of The Year award by NDTV Profit in 2007.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
This segment of the article will surely be filled with praises for the bike. Mileage offered by the bike is the best in class. The Exhaust TEC technology used by Bajaj in its new series of bikes definitely helps to improve the mileage of the bikes. Bajaj claims an average of 65 kilometers per liter, which falls to around 55-57 under normal testing conditions, which is quite impressive. With a 13-liter fuel tank, Platina dominates the market in the mileage section.
Colors
Available in three dual tones, Black with Blue decal, black with red decal, and red with red decal, Platina manages to keep the head high of its makers. Irrespective of the low price tag it carries with itself, Platina impresses one and all with its looks.
Acceleration and Pick up
Considering the 100 cc engine it carries with itself, the acceleration offered by the bike can surely not outshine. Reaching 0-60 kilometers per hour in 9.68 seconds, the bike disappoints no one. Fro a 100 cc bike, this much of a pick-up is respectable, but not remarkable. Also, Bajaj claims a top speed of 90 kilometers per hour, which is approximately true.
Appearance
The bike is surely not the one that catches the eye of everyone in the street, but it also does not let anyone raise a finger regarding its looks. Considering the 100 cc engine and such a low cost, Platina impresses one and all. With such a low price tag, one obviously doesn’t expect too much regarding looks and design. Its design is inspired by is predecessor, Wind 125. With the limited budget available, the engineers have done a good work with the bike. The elegant silver and chrome colored stickers on the fuel tank do not look tacky. However, the budget is surely reflected in the instrument panel. Platina features analog speedometer and analog fuel gauge with no low fuel or low battery indicator.
Comfort Feature
Despite the low budget, the manufacturers managed to make it a rider friendly bike. Offering an upright and relaxed riding posture, the bike manages to prove healthy for long journeys. Comfortable rider and pillion seat and perfectly placed grab rail makes it an overall comfortable bike to hop on.
Dimensions
The slim, low and slightly extended body of Platina has excellent figures.
Length X Width X Height = 1990 x 770 x 1090 mm.
Carrying a 100 cc engine, it offers a curb weight of 113 kilograms. The bike manages a ground clearance of 162 mm.
Engine
Bajaj Platina is equipped with 99.27 cc air-cooled engine. The 4-stroke single cylinder engine manages a healthy ride and an efficient mileage. Platina’s heart is capable of producing a maximum power of 8.2 Bhp at 7500 rpm and a maximum torque of 8.05 Nm at 4500 rpm. With the new exhaustTEC technology used by Bajaj, the bike runs a smoother ride and generates a better mileage. Bajaj has used the 5-speed gearbox with all down pattern clearly indicating its aim to improve mileage rather than giving the bike a sporty touch.
Wheels
The budget bike does not come with alloy wheels. The slim Platina comes with slim tires. With a wheelbase of 1275 mm, the tires perform well enough dry surfaces. However, there is still some problem regarding the performance of tires on wet or sticky surfaces. So the bike should be avoided to be taken off the road. The front tire is a 2.75 X 17” while the rear one is a 3 X 17”.
Suspension
Bajaj Platina’s suspension performs reasonably well absorbing shocks and keeping vibrations to minimum. Like other budget bikes made by Bajaj, it has a hydraulic telescopic type front suspension with a travel of 125 mm and hydraulic SNS type rear suspension with a travel of 100 mm. Keeping in mind the low budget of the bike, the front and rear suspensions manage a good job and offer a reasonably smooth ride even on an unfriendly terrain.
Handling and Control
Bajaj Platina offers a comfortable, stable and smooth ride. The bike is well balanced and is quite good in terms of cornering. The engine makes a little more noise, but that is not such a big factor so as to be considered. The ExhaustTEC technology used helps the bike to run at low speeds without jerking the engine. The inclusion of ride control switch indicates optimum throttle for an improved mileage. With the tag of a budget bike, it marks the absence of disc brakes. Both, the front and the rear wheel, include 130 mm drum brakes.
Pros
· A very low budget bike with not so bad looks
· Offers excellent mileage which the is the highest for a 100 cc bike
· Latest ExhaustTEC technology used improves mileage
· Unique ride control switch indicates optimum speed for better mileage
Cons
· Not so impressive acceleration
· Looks are average
· Absence of disc brakes
· Poor performance off the road
