“We have taken the Apache RTR to the next level with obsessive engineering and menacing design”, the words said by H S Goindi, marketing president, TVS Motor Company. TVS launched its mean, aggressive and beast themed bike on 30th April 2012. With all the glittering commercials flashing on television from past one month, we expected the launch to be a lot more than this. Although the cosmetic changes in the bike have given it a very beastly yet attractive look, there are no changes made in the engine or technical specifications section. TVS Apache has always been a strong competitor of Bajaj Pulsar in this segment of two-wheeler market, and this new launch is sure to menace the rivals. With no changes made in Bajaj Pulsar’s looks since years, TVSs’ experiments in Apache’s looks impresses one and all every time. From Apache 150, to Apache rtr 160, then came Apache rtr 160 fi, and now the Apache rtr 160 hyper edge, everything has surely paid off for the Motor Company. This beast has already made an impact on the market within a week of its launch.

Mileage and Fuel Economy
While buying a bike of this caliber, you are sure to skip the mileage section. But for some conservative buyers, mileage offered by the bike should be mentioned here. So here I go. The company claims an average of 39-44 kilometers per liter while driving in city and 43-48 kilometers per liter while driving on a highway, and it is correct. With a fuel tank capacity similar to its predecessors of 16 liters, TVS Apache RTR 160 will surely reduce your trips to the petrol pump.
Then new Apache RTR 160 comes in four new shades- Green, Red, Yellow and Grey. The Green colored Apache featured in the TV commercial is the most impressive shade.
Acceleration and Pick up
From Apache 150 to the new Apache RTR 160, pick-up offered by these TVS’s kids have been excellent. Definitely ahead of their rivals in this category, the new Apache’s acceleration is fast and zippy. It reaches 0-60 kilometers per hour in just 4.5 seconds. Also, it has a Top Speed of about 118 kilometers per hour, which is almost the same as Bajaj Pulsar 180’s.
The beast themed TVS’s warrior surely wins hands down in this one. With all the cosmetic changes done to its predecessor, the new hyper edge surely has an edge over its rivals. With the amazing hot looks the beast features, TVS Apache RTR 160 is sure to catch the eye of everyone wherever it goes. The daytime LED lights placed side by side just above the headlight are introduced first time in any Indian bike. The 16-liter fuel tank with huge tank shrouds looks amazing. There are no changes made in the tail light of the bike and is similar to the previous versions. One can hardly notice the beautiful 6-spoke black alloy wheels thanks to the massive disc brakes. The addition of carbon fiber on the fuel tank and around instrument panel is a new feature in the bike. The instrument panel is untouched with same blue backlit and similar analog and digital consoles.
Sitting upright and riding a bike is definitely helpful for those having a back problem, but it is boring and outdated. Apache RTR 160 has a sporty and aggressive stance. With a few complaints in the previous versions of Apache, the sitting posture has been worked upon and has definitely improved. There is a perfect proportion between the handle and the foot pegs to give it a sporty stance, and not the boring one. But, tall guys will find it a little too compact.
The muscular beast has a larger volume than its rival Pulsar 180. It has a standard size of 2020 X 730 X 1050 mm. It offers a ground clearance of 180 mm. It weighs just 136 kilograms, which is quite appreciable for a bike of this segment. All these specifications are almost the same as its previous version, Apache RTR 160.
TVS Motor Company is the only Indian 2-wheeler company that has a factory racing team, and it definitely reflects in its production. The engine is definitely punchy and makes you throttle more and more until you run out of road. The bike is equipped with a 159.7 cc air-cooled 4-stroke engine. It offers a maximum power of 15.2 Bhp at 8500 rpm and a maximum torque of 13.1 Nm at 6000 rpm, which is remarkable and outclass every other bike in this segment. There are slight vibrations in the engine at around 60-70 kilometers per hour but after that the ride is quite smooth. Apache RTR 160 compensates this not so big disadvantage by the smooth performance of the clutch.
The bike features 6-spoke black alloy wheels, which are accompanied by stylish disc brakes. The front tire measures 90/90 X 17” while the rear tire measures 100/80 X 17”. Apache could have gone with the tubeless tires, which it hasn’t. The bike features 270 mm disc brakes on the front wheel while 130 mm drum brakes on the rear wheel.
Do not worry about the potholes when you are driving Apache, the bike is a smoothie. Suspension has always been one of the high point for Apache, so the motor company has kept the suspension unchanged. It has a telescopic fork front suspension and mono-tube inverted gas filled shock rear suspension.
Handling and Control
The best part of the bike. The machine handles superbly and the ride is beautiful. The bike is very agile and easy to manoeuver whether in city traffic or on a highway. With the racing stance that it offers and a wheelbase of 1300 mm, cornering is a dream with this bike.
