Yamaha has introduced many bikes in the 125cc segment. One of them is Yamaha Ss 125, a stylish aerodynamically designed bike built on latest technology. This new ride is launched to give a tight competition to the other models available in this segment. The bike has everything to attract young minds, power, looks and the most concerned point of an Indian, fuel efficiency. The color scheme, the trendy and pleasing tail lamp with rear turn indicators has made the appearance more classy and satisfying. The fully analog type instrument panel looks sporty with speedometer, fuel gauge and tachometer.

Yamaha Ss 125 seems to be an enhanced version of Yamaha Gladiator with new graphics and some technical changes. The dimensions of the bike are 1995mm (length), 730mm (width) and 1100mm (height). The kerb weight of the bike stands at 125kg. The wheelbase is 1295mm and the minimum ground clearance is 155mm. The bike is installed with a telescopic fork hydraulic type suspension at the front wheel and a rectangular swing arm with hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. The vehicle comes fitted with 5-spoke alloy wheels whose specifications are front tyre is 2.75-18.4PR while the rear one is 3.00-18.6PR. The front wheel is also equipped with 240mm (dia) disc brakes and the rear with a 130mm (dia) drum brakes. It shares the engine of Gladiator RS 125 which also could generate the same power and torque output. The bike can also reach 0 to 60 in just 7 seconds and it can cross the mark of 100kmph easily. Yamaha Ss 125 can deliver a mileage of 55kmpl on the busy roads whereas the mileage can be increased to 60kmpl on the highways. The vehicle has the fuel tank capacity of 13.6 liters.

Overall Review

Originated from Yamaha Gladiator, Yamaha SS 125 is no different in looks. In March 2008, Yamaha launched two variants of Yamaha Gladiator, Yamaha Gladiator type RS and type SS. In August 2010, Gladiator type RS was removed from the market, and Gladiator type SS came to be known as Yamaha SS 125. Inspired from the original Gladiator, Yamaha SS 125 is pretty similar in features as well as designing. With the sporty look that the bike carries, it is one of the strong competitors in the 125 cc segment. With the overall sporty designing and product reliability, Yamaha SS 125 adds more zing to its portfolio. The bike designed for the youngsters carries with itself splendid looks. The bike is equipped with all the latest features and can be said to be one of the few top commuters in the market. With a few cosmetic changes in gladiator and slight technical up gradations, SS 125 is a huge improvement as per customer satisfaction is concerned. Targeting its rivals, Bajaj Discover 125, XCD 125, Honda Twister and many others, it stands tall in the market with Yamaha’s latest technologies. With such a stiff competition in this segment of the two-wheeler market, Yamaha SS 125 is nowhere behind anyone. Giving tough fight to every other bike of this segment, Yamaha SS 125 has proved its metal since the very first day of its launch.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

Yamaha SS 125 is fitted with 13.6-liter fuel tank. You will not be very pleased after listening the mileage offered by the bike. Yamaha claims an average of 50-55 kilometers per liter while driving in city and an average of around 60 kilometers per liter while riding on a highway. But the users of the bike have found that the bike gives an average of just 40-45 kilometers per liter. When talking about commuters, you ought to expect a better mileage than this. Honda twister gives a mileage of about 80 kilometers per liter, which is way above.

Colors

Indifferent to its rivals, Yamaha SS 125 is available in just two basic colors. The bike looks elegant and sporty in the available colors and the color combinations are definitely eye catching. Featuring the sportiness and masculine character, the bike lacks all the glittering and flashy designs. Keeping the trend of Gladiator alive, the available colors are- black with blue and black with red.

Acceleration and Pick up

Yamaha SS 125 showcases Yamaha’s benchmark acceleration. The engine is fitted with Yamaha throttle position sensor resulting in superb pick-up. Continuing the trend set by RX 100, SS 125 responds well to the twist in the throttle. With the short gear ratios, the bike reaches 0-60 kilometers per hour very quickly and the bike is capable to reach a maximum speed of 108 kilometers per hour. The bike reaches 90-95 kilometers easily but takes time to reach up to its full potential. The engine remains stable and well refined throughout and bike’s acceleration is above all the other bikes of this segment.

Appearance

Yamaha SS 125 looks are inspired from Yamaha Gladiator. Just some minor cosmetic changes in Gladiator made SS 125 ready. The aerodynamically designed visor looks huge and has an air vent that allows air to pass through thereby tumbling resistance, thus providing better stability. The stylish looking headlamp and smart chain cover gives it a distinctive masculine look. The taillight is similar to Gladiator and the lowered front cowl adds to the sportiness of the bike. The attractive looking muffler guarding the exhaust pipes is given a unique styling. Yamaha SS 125 lacks digital display. Overall, the all-analog is not so impressive. The cluster design is basic and consists of speedometer, rpm meter and fuel gauge. The dials are easy to read but lack visual appeal. In a nutshell, the bike has got good sporty looks and the designers have done an excellent work.

Comfort Feature

Yamaha Motors have done a lot of homework regarding the comfort feature and have proved to be successful with their attempt. The shoe-shaped seat is wide enough and comfortable for both, rider as well as pillion. The foot pegs and handlebar are perfectly positioned for good ergonomics. After riding Yamaha SS 125, you are bound to give credit to the Yamaha Motors for the comfort provided in the bike.

Dimensions

The overall length, width and height of Yamaha SS 125 are 2065 mm, 730 mm and 1100 mm respectively. The standard dimensions of the bike are well suited for Indian roads. The seat height is maintained at 790 mm. The lightweight SS 125 weighs just 125 kilograms. The ground clearance provided by the bike is 155 mm.

Engine

The engine of Yamaha SS 125 is above par with other bikes of this segment. As soon as you start the bike, you start feeling the power that the bike can generate. Yamaha SS 125 is equipped with a 123.77 cc engine that can generate a maximum power of 11 bhp at 7500 rpm. The 4-stroke air-cooled SOHC two-valve engine can generate a maximum torque of 10.4 Nm at 6500 rpm. With such excellent figures, you are sure to enjoy the ride with the sweet humming sound of the ‘Yamaha’ engine.

Wheels

Yamaha SS 125 features 5-spoke Black alloy wheels. The front tire measures 2.75-18.4 PR while the rear tire measures 3.00-18.6 PR. The tires could have been a little wider to provide a better grip on the surface.

Suspension

The commuter is basically designed for city ride or for riding on a highway, but still the suspension offered by the bike is excellent. The bike does well on uneven and bumpy surfaces, absorbing most of the shocks. The front tire is equipped with telescopic fork hydraulic type suspension while the rear tire is fitted with rectangular swing arm suspension.

Handling and Control

Yamaha SS 125 has amazing stability and there are very less vibrations, even at higher speeds. The bike handles very well, as other Yamaha bikes. Although the bike is a little vulnerable at cornering, due to the narrow tire size.

Pros

·      Good looks and design

·      Smooth and powerful engine

·      Advanced features at such a cheap price

Cons

·      Tires could have been a little better

·      All analog instrument cluster

·      Mileage below par with other bikes of this segment

News Updates

Yamaha SS 125 is an improved version of the old Gladiator. The old Gladiator type SS came to be known as Yamaha SS 125 since august 2010. The bike has been performing well in the market and giving stiff competition to its competitors.
