Kawasaki bikes in India are sold in a joint venture between the Japanese biggie, Kawasaki
and Indian two wheeler giant, Bajaj Auto Ltd. Kawasaki is based in Japan, founded by Shozo
Kawasaki. The company started out with ship building, and still maintains this part; it also is into
manufacturing of water crafts for personal use, industrial part, trains, instruments for aerospace,
jet aircrafts, jumbo jets, etc. However, the name Kawasaki is basically known for bikes and
other heavy terrain machines. These Kawasaki bikes Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan,
Phillippines, Thailand, Indonesia and United States of America. Kawasaki Motorcycles Co., Ltd.
came into being in the year 1963, with the merger of Kawasaki and Meguro. Though the first
exported Kawasaki bike was rejected, somewhere during the mid 1960s, most of the Kawasaki
bikes were seen to most loved, when Kawasaki started exporting quite a substantial number of
bikes.
As for the Indian leg of Kawasaki, the company entered India in the year 1984, making friends with Bajaj Auto, when Kawasaki was lending the technology knowledge to Bajaj Auto and the outcome bikes were known as Kawasaki Bajaj bikes. Soon, Bajaj forgot its ally, Kawasaki. But once the Indian two wheeler giant was reminded of Kawasaki, it was quick to launch Ninja 250R in India; however, Kawasaki soon decided to venture out alone in the country and formed India Kawasaki Motors Pvt. Ltd., which undertook all the production and sales of all the bikes, including the imports. Under this name, few sports and super sports bikes were launched. However, since most of resources other than the technology was from Bajaj, the units were being assembled in Chakan plant of Bajaj Auto, and few other reasons like Honda being a big time competition to the monopoly of Bajaj Auto, was fluttering its wings and spreading way faster than expected, when Bajaj has to soon get back to being Bajaj Kawasaki. However, by now, Bajaj Auto had earned a huge market and name on the base of the huge success of the various scooters. Kawasaki did manufacture scooters but who has heard of it. But after all the stiff competition Bajaj was facing, Kawasaki was the only safe bet. So here was Bajaj tying knots with Kawasaki to produce motorcycles now, first time ever straying from its foray into scooters. Bajaj loved the technology from Kawasaki, Kawasaki loved its loyalty.
Bajaj started off with Kawasaki with producing a revamped version of a Gpz500, which was brought in as per Indian specifications, made for Indian consumers, to be called KB 100. However, this bike, though perfect for Indian consumers could not do well, because of which Bajaj had to fight some losses. During the process of which Bajaj bought some stakes of KTM, once it acquired 40% of stakes from KTM, Bajaj brought in India KTM Duke 125 and KTM Duke 200. Meanwhile, on rather smaller scales, Bajaj was producing Wind 125 which was basically Kawasaki technology. With the success of , one of the popular Kawasaki bikes in India, Kawasaki furthered its plans to launch Ninja 250R and Ninja 650R. has become one of the most expensive Kawasaki bikes in India.
